Abraham Verghese is the Professor for the Theory and Practice of Medicine at Stanford
University Medical
School and Senior Associate Chair of the Department of Internal
Medicine. He is also a best-selling author and a physician with a reputation for his focus
on healing in an era where technology often overwhelms the human side of medicine.
ABOUT OUR EVENTS – Thesecondopinion has three major fundraisers annually. Our
Annual Breakfast Speaker Event in April/May, Our annual Golf Fundraiser in
September/October and our Annual Donor Campaign from November through
December. All of these fundraisers are critical to the organizations financial
sustainability. In total the events bring together over 1,000 people, including cancer
patients, medical professionals, corporate and foundation partners.
ANNUAL BREAKFAST SPEAKER EVENT – Is an inspiring community gathering that
brings together 150-200 people, including local community members, corporate and
foundation partners, medical professionals, and cancer survivors. It is our largest
fundraiser and contributions from this event make up a quarter of our revenues.
In 2023 the speaker for our 6th Annual Breakfast event will be Abraham Verghese,
M.D., MACP, Author
ABRAHAM VERGHESE is senior associate chair and professor for the Theory and
Practice of Medicine, Stanford University School of Medicine. He sees patients, teaches
students and writes. His first book, MY OWN COUNTRY, about AIDS in rural
Tennessee, was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award for 1994 and was
made into a movie directed by Mira Nair and starring Naveen Andrews, Marisa Tomei,
Glenne Headley and others. His second book, THE TENNIS PARTNER, was a New
York Times notable book and a national bestseller. CUTTING FOR STONE is his first
novel. It is an epic love story, medical story and family saga. It appeared in hardback in
2009, and is in its 9th printing and is being translated into 16 languages. It is a Vintage
paperback and has remained on the New York Times bestseller list for over 110 weeks
at this writing. His latest novel THE COVENANT OF WATER will be available in May
2023 and a copy will be provided to attendees of our 6th Annual Breakfast Speaker
Event on April 27, 2023.
Dr. Verghese’s writing, both non-fiction and fiction, has to do with his view of medicine
as a passionate and romantic pursuit; he sees the bedside ritual of examining the
patient as a critical, cost saving, time-honored and necessary, (but greatly threatened)
skill that cements the patient-physician relationship. He coined the term the ‘iPatient’ to
describe the phenomenon of the virtual patient in the computer becoming the object of
attention to the detriment of the real patient in the bed.
TEE OFF FOR THESECONDOPINION – Survivors and Thrivers Golf Tournament –
Our 7th Annual Golf Fundraiser brings together 75-100 golfers at one of the Bay Area’s beautiful golf courses. It includes a post-golf reception and auction. It offers an
opportunity for golfers to meet new people, network, and see old friends. Our goal is to
connect, laugh and have fun while raising critical funds for cancer patients.
Sponsors for this event receive signage at the hole of their choice and the opportunity to
provide a sample product or advertisement in the golf swag bag and much more.
ANNUAL DONOR CAMPAIGN – is thesecondopinion’s year end donor appeal.
Sponsors for this event are usually people, corporations or foundations providing
matching funds. If donors know that their donation will be matched they are more likely
to give. We mail out over 1,000 solicitation cards and you can be listed on that card if
you provide matching funds! We also participate in ‘GivingTuesday’ and solicit through
social media during the months of November and December.
